Edmonton, AB – (Sunday, July 23, 2006) – Canadian Tire/Monroe Brakes
driver Peter Gibbons qualified16th for the 100 km event. CASCAR teams had a
55 minute qualifying session on Saturday morning, and the Gibbons Motorsports
team was extremely optimistic about their qualifying effort after being 2nd quickest
in practice on Friday.
As luck would have it Gibbons would get in just one lap on the Edmonton road
course before running over something on the track that put a hole in the oil
pan. At the end of the qualifying session, Gibbons and crew were able to make
the necessary repairs to the aluminum oil pan, but would have to start the race
from the middle of the pack.
At the drop of the green flag, Gibbons was set to charge to the front of
the pack, when a full course caution came out on lap 2 forcing Gibbons to ride
around for 8 laps in the 16th spot. Once the race resumed he was able to pass
cars with ease and by half way was in the 9th place. As the cars spread out on
the course Gibbons was in pursuit of his next position when he experienced
transmission problems and was forced to continue the race with only 4th gear.
At the conclusion of the race he was posted in 9th.
“We had a great car early in the race, but it was hard on the Canadian Tire
Chevy once the transmission went. On a course like this one, we shift about 15
times per lap, with just one gear it was tough to gain anymore positions so we
just held our own.” Commented Gibbons on his top 10 finish.
Race Summary: Jeff Lapcevich won the Grizzly Headz 100, followed by Kerry
Micks, and Australian driver Kenny Habul.
